What is it?
The process of performing Anaerobic (without oxygen) exercise, interspersed with short rest periods, or less intense active recovery.
How does it work?
High intensity exercise works to improve both the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems building endurance. This process creates an oxygen debt in the body which it works to replace post-exercise and to return the body to homeostasis. This ‘exercise post oxygen consumption’ phenomenon requires calories to be burnt.
It also helps to challenge fast twitch fibers building endurance and challenging the cardiovascular system to help it become more efficient and strong.
What are some H.I.I.T exercises?
- Burpees
- Skipping
- Star jumps
- Squat jumps
- High knees / tuck jumps
Never stop exercising when performing high intensity work. Instead, alternate between high and low intensity. You want to aim to drop the heart rate just enough so you can go all out once again.
